Fit 24 is a three-month program that will use a Fitbit and weekly text messages to encourage Hispanic adolescents (14-16 years of age) to improve their sleep and physical activity behaviors to reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes.
Each participant in the Fit24 program will receive a Fitbit to wear for the duration of the program and will regularly receive text messages to help them set and monitor goals for improving their activity and sleep. Text messages will also include tips and strategies for how to meet their goals as well as motivation and support to help teens along the way. We’ve chosen to focus on Hispanic adolescents as they are disproportionately burdened by obesity placing them at high risk for type 2 diabetes. We want to develop an affordable way to use tools like Fitbits and text messages to help youth get moving and get the sleep they need to reduce their chances of developing this costly disease.
To be included in the study, youth must:
· Self-identify as Hispanic
· Be 14-16 years of age · Present with obesity (BMI% ≥95th or BMI ≥20kg/m2)
· Own his/her own phone with text messaging capabilities
